The musical Aida was written by Auguste Mariette based on Giuseppe Verdi’s Italian-language opera. 2nd Flight Productions using the stage at Chantilly High School performed the musical. The musical was based on the legend of Aida, the Nubian princess who was captured as a slave to Radames, the captain of Egypt. The performance is divided into two acts and it started with Radames fianci , Amneris, as a statue during the present times in a museum. The museum displayed a tomb with the carvings of a man and a woman buried together. Amneris’s statue begins to sing and tells the tale behind the tomb. The set for the museum was sufficiently constructed for the story. The tomb was realistic and the background sets of Egyptian writing were appropriate to the feeling and style. However, at first it was difficult to grasp who Amneris was when she sang because she was position center right and maybe a little down right of the stage. There were no other props that clearly indicated that she was part of the museum and that she was a statue. There was a back narrow parallel platform that elevated her separate from the ground. The ensemble members were the museum tourists observing the artifacts. However they were on the ground level and there were no indications of them acknowledging her as a fellow artifact of the museum. Throughout the play, Aida is a strong character who deeply cares about her people. In the plot she hides her identity as the Nubian Princess to save her people. The actress did an amazing job portraying those characteristics. Her voice was powerful and so phenomenal that each song she sung moved me. Every emotion she evoked moved the audience through her acting and her singing. There was moment where the actress belted out a song that described the struggles of being a princess of Nubia. Her body language was like a building wearing away and her facial expressions revealed pain and sorrow. Another moment that was very effective was when she finally accepted her love for Radames. Her body language was playful, her voice was light and her facial expression was soft and more youthful. She was the best and most excellent actress in the play. The lighting had its good effects and bad effects. During serious moments, the lighting was used well and isolated the light towards the main characters. However, when the music became lively, the lighting was in all different colors, similar to a disco lighting, which I found unnecessary and sloppy for a historical musical. The costuming was decent as well but I expected more from a community theatre company. The costumes would be acceptable for a high school production but not a community one. The slave clothes were fine and tattered; however, the fabric was new and it appeared new from stage. Since the setting is in historical times, the fabric must invoke that. The costume for Aida throughout the play was in a shiny fabric that was glittery. This was an anachronism since the setting, again, is in historical times. The ensemble was probably the poorest aspect of the play. In every act they were in, they were never in synch with each other. No one seemed to listen or hear each other. The ensembles made careless mistakes with their hands fidgeting, their eyes not focused and the acting did not seem like acting. In acting, the actor must have a purpose or goal to evoke good acting; however the ensemble did not do that. They moved around with unmotivated movement. Their dance, however, was stronger than their acting. At times they were no in synch but they did decent on their dances. I wished that the ensemble danced with more diverse movements. The dances seemed a little parallel and conformed to the same movements at times. The ensemble men were Radames soldiers in the beginning and did a dance routine that had the characteristics of a march. The performance of the ensemble however, was poor. Their entire routine was not in synch and it was sloppy. In order to portray as soldiers, they should have had more cut and dry movements that were sharp and strict. However, they performed as if they were relaxed and bored. It was more of a casual walk than a march. Towards the end the soldiers did an impressive break dance when the song lifted from its austere melody, however I found it unnecessary. Overall the musical was satisfactory as a community musical. The background music was appropriate, the main actors were excellent in portraying their characters and the songs were sung on key. Although there were many errors in setting, and ensemble members, the director succeeded in telling and portraying the story of Aida in a reasonable fashion.

The bystander effect is the name given to a social psychological phenomenon in cases where individuals do not offer help in an emergency situation when other people are present. It is a situational ambiguity; when we are confused about a situation and unconsciously interpret the event as if nothing is happening unusual. Some researchers have found that onlookers are less likely to intervene if the situation is ambiguous. We usually develop an illusion of normality. Because of the ignorance of other people in emergency situation; we also feel that nothing is so serious and it will be fine. One major factor of bystander effect is busy life and too much introvert behaviour. We rarely give a thought to stop and judge the situation and react accordingly. Some researchers have found that onlookers are less likely to intervene if the situation is ambiguous. There are couple of more reasons which are cause of bystander effect. Kitty was the eldest child of five; she grew up in Brooklyn in a Middle-Class Italian American family. Later on in life, Kitty acquired a position as a bar manager for Ev’s Eleventh Hour Sports Bar in Queens and she was known to be a Gay individual due to the fact that she shared her Kew Gardens apartment with her lover Mary Ann Zielonko. Even though the United States was experiencing a cultural revolution, Kitty’s lifestyle was still looked down upon in society. The fact that Ms. Genovese was a female bar manager and worked late hours was especially distressing to many. Around 3:15 AM, Kitty had returned home from work and parked her car 100 feet away from her apartment building. On her walk home, Kitty was attacked, robbed, raped, and stabbed several times by Winston Moseley. During the attack, Kitty had desperately screamed out for help but not even one call was made to the police by her neighbors until 3:50 AM (30 minutes into the attack). The police responded within minutes of the call, but Kitty was in such critical condition that she died on route to the hospital at 4:15 AM. After further investigation and psychiatric examination Winston Moseley, a twenty nine year old African American business machine operator, was found o be a necrophile. The public was appalled by the murder of Ms. Genovese. Mainly because it had taken so long for her neighbors to contact the authorities and the person who had called had only done so after much thought. An attention grabbing article titled â€Å"Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didn’t Call the Police† was published shortly after the murder in the New York Times, the article read â€Å"For more than half an hour thirty eight respectable, law abiding citizens in Queens watched a killer stalk and stab a woman in three separate attacks in Kew Gardens†. This murder was so publicized that it caused the NYPD to reform its telephone reporting system and it prompted psychological research conducted by Social psychologists John Darley and Bibb Latane. Darley and Latane conducted a social experiment which they titled â€Å"The Bystander Apathy Experiment†, after extensive research they concluded that â€Å"larger numbers of bystanders decrease the likelihood that someone will step forward and help a victim†. Feminist psychologist Frances Cherry disagreed with these findings however, and believed that what had occurred with Kitty would not have been true if the victim was a man. She believed this because of the cultural norms of that era, where most people were unlikely to get involved if they thought that a man was attacking his wife/girlfriend. In conclusion, I believe that both â€Å"The Bystander Effect† and Francis Cherry’s statement are correct in deciphering the murder of Kitty Genovese due to the fact that one must take both human nature and cultural norms/facts into account when considering such a horrific event in history.

Formats must be followed according to a style guide that prescribes values for things like margin width, indentation, spacing, and referencing style. This is not the same thing as the structure of the essay which is academic and organized to present your writing in a logical order. For example, a student might be asked to prepare a five paragraph paper according to the Harvard style guide. The ‘five paragraph’ request is a prescription of a structure. I always write an outline, but I don’t always know what my completed project will look like before I get started. Furthermore, I am often keen to get started with the writing, knowing that it is easier to change everything than to start from scratch. An outline will always help you get better marks, but I do not believe it is necessary to follow the common writing guides which suggest that finishing the outline before you write, is as important as having a building plan before commencing construction. If you can write your outline before you write the body, it will save you time. Your outline can be written while you undertake the whole project and both can evolve as your work takes shape. The outline reads like an essay map even if it is not a pre-written plan but a metric of how your structure progresses logically. It offers a brief account of the content and quick notes about how this content relates to the topic or prompt. It can serve as a measure of how well you are keeping to the topic. Even if you are not writing it before you begin the essay, still doing so helps you get better results, every time. The most important thing is to get started so don’t get stuck trying to imagine how everything will take shape just because someone told you to write the outline before you begin. Essay Introductions and Conclusions It is only in very rare cases now that I would start writing an introduction before I have finished writing the first draft of the main body. A lot of writing guides will suggest the most obvious path and tell you to write your introduction first and then ask that you follow the introduction as you run through the arguments in the essay body. However, I believe that this is the role of the outline and that the introduction is more similar to a table of contents which is written after the book has been written. I would proof-read my document, and then I would write a paragraph which I think is the most succinct and useful introduction to the main body, such as it is when finished. Similarly, I suggest writing a conclusion after the introduction has been written. This gives you the opportunity to write a conclusion that reminds the reader of the agenda set by the introduction and reiterates how the main body’s arguments and evidence achieved the goals of the introduction. It is not exactly, â€Å"say what you will say, say it, and then say what was said.† I am not claiming that the essay conclusion should be a copy of the introduction but that they work together. The arguments are laid out in the main body according to the progression of logic we map in the outline. We then write an introduction to state our goals and foreshadow the progression of logic which will follow. Finally, we write a conclusion which states how our arguments given worked together to achieve the goals we stated in the introduction. A Catchy Essay Hook The ‘hook’ can be more than just the witty one-liner in the topic sentence. When you have written the main body, and you are now thinking about how to wrap it all together with a neat introduction and conclusion, think the message of your essay as a whole; your ‘hook’ is like the ribbon you put around the wrapped up present. Is there some idea that can lead to your analysis or argument well, or colorfully illustrate the question you are attempting to answer? It is great if you can think of a hook and allow this idea to filter through the title, the introduction paragraph and into the way, your frame the progression of logic and conclude your argument. The hook is like the riff in that song that gets stuck in your head. Similarly, it is advantages if this hook can resonate through your work to be something that makes your ideas and progression of thought memorable. It starts with an attention-grabbing question or provocative statement to constitute your title, but it works best when you follow through with this idea rather than let it stand alone.
